ANATOLY DOBRYNIN
Color greeting card honoring space explorers, signed by Anatoly F. Dobrynin, Soviet Ambassador to the U. S. from 1962 to 1986. Dobrynin's secret meetings with Robert Kennedy helped to avert a war during the 1962 Cuban missile crisis. Accompanied by letter of transmittal.
Greeting card signed "A. Dobrynin", folded to 6x8½. Signed inside. On front is a color image of the Moscow monument honoring space explorers. Accompanied by a handwritten letter, dated 1972 January 17, from an American collector in Phoenix requesting Dobrynin's autograph. Dobrynin (1919-2010) was the Soviet Ambassador to the U. S. from 1962 to 1986, from the administration of John F. Kennedy to that of Ronald Reagan. A strong argument can be made that he was the most important ambassador of the twentieth century. Newly arrived in Washington, and not informed in advance of Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev's placement of offensive missile in Cuba, he held three secret meetings with Robert Kennedy which proved vital in ending the Cuban missile crisis without war. He also, with newly-minted U. S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, helped to defuse a crisis between the Soviet Union and the U. S. in October of 1973, when President Nixon put U. S. forces on global alert in response to the perceived threat of direct Soviet intervention in the Arab-Israeli Yom Kippur War. Upon his return to Moscow, Dobrynin headed the International Department of the Communist Party's Central Committee until his retirement in 1988. His memoirs In Confidence (1995) are full of interesting revelations about American Presidents from Kennedy to Reagan and Soviet leaders from Khrushchev to Gorbachev. Fine condition.
