ANDREA LEEDS
Signed original ink drawing of Leed's schnauzer Sugar Plum
Original ink drawing signed "Self-caricature/my schnauzer, Sugar
Plum/Andrea Leeds". B/w, 5 ¾ x 8 ½. Leeds (1914-1984) earned a
Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for Stage Door (1937).
She must have given a strong performance, indeed, since the Academy passed
over co-stars Katharine Hepburn, Ginger Rogers, Ann Miller and Lucille Ball.
Leeds' other starring roles included The Real Glory (1939), opposite Gary
Cooper; and Earthbound (1940), her last film. She made over 20 films
between 1933 and 1940, but lost interest in her career after the death of her
fiancé, skater Jack Dunn, in 1938. She gave up films after Earthbound to
raise a family with Robert Stewart Howard. They eventually settled in Palm
Springs, California. There, she owned a modest jewelry shop, often designing her
own pieces. Page has been folded in three and unfolded. Otherwise in fine
condition.
