Close up of the world renowned Hungarian-American operatic baritone, signed in blue ink. (2¾x3¾)
Photograph signed: "Andrew Földi ", in blue ink. B/w, 2¾x3¾ overall, 2x3 image (one surface). American operas are undoubtedly indebted to Andrew Földi (1926-2007), the world famous bass baritone who through performance and education dedicated 40 years of his life to opera. Földi, born in Hungary and raised in Chicago, made his professional debut in 1954 at the Lyric Opera of Chicago performing Biondello in The Taming of the Shrew. Later performing at the San Francisco Opera and the Cincinnati Zoo Opera, Földi took his career international with debuts at La Scala, Wiener Staatsoper and the Zurich Opera. In 1975, he settled in New York City where he joined the Metropolitan Opera, performing his first of 85 appearances that year. He's best remembered for his roles as Schigolch in Alban Berg's Lulu (1977), Dansker in Benjamin Britten's Billy Budd (1978) and Dr. Dulcamara in L'Elisir d'Amore by Gaetano Donizetti. While still major on stage, Földi became a professor at the Cleveland Institute of Music, and later served as director of the Lyric Opera Center for American Artists. Lightly bowed. Ink notes (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
