ANDREW G. CURTIN
The Civil War governor signs a 7x2½ slip, mentioning his home town, Bellefonte, Pa.
Signature: "A. G. Curtin/Bellefonte/Penna.", 7x2½. Andrew Gregg Curtin (1817-1894) was Governor of Pennsylvania (1861-1867), Minister to Russia (1869-1872) and U.S. Representative (1881-1887). Elected Governor as head of a People's Party dedicated to preserving the Union but willing to compromise with the south on the issue of slavery, he provided vital aid to the Union cause once the war began. He was called "the soldier's friend" for his efforts to organize better supply and care for troops in the field. When early reverses threatened support for President Lincoln, Curtin organized and hosted a "Loyal War Governor's Conference (September 1862) to affirm support for the war effort. Curtin invited Abraham Lincoln to Gettysburg for dedication of the military cemetery there, and was seated with him when the President delivered the Gettysburg Address. As reform Republican, he frequently quarreled with the powerful but corrupt Senator Simon Cameron and switched to the Democratic Party before running successfully for three terms in Congress. The historic town of Bellefonte, Pennsylvania was home to five governors, including Curtin. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
