Harvard preacher and president Andrew Preston Peabody wrote this
letter from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, saying that he couldn't send a copy of
his Address of 1843. This Address was from back when he was a preacher at
Portsmouth's South Parish.
Autograph letter signed "A. P. Peabody". Pencil notations in
top left corner and on card in unknown hand. 1 page, 5x6, affixed to a 6¼x6¼
card. Portsmouth, New Hampshire, dated "March 28," year is cut off.In full: "My dear Sir, I have but one copy of my Address of 1843,
& should prefer to keep that. You may perhaps be able to get a copy from the
publishers, or from some other source. If you cannot, I suppose that I ought to
give you my copy; but I should do so very reluctantly. Very truly yours,".
American clergyman and educator Peabody (1811-1893) was a preacher at
the Unitarian South Parish in Portsmouth, New Hampshire (1833-1860) and
preacher and Plummer Professor of Christian Morals at Harvard University from
1860 to 1881. He was also Harvard's Acting President in 1862 and from
1868 to 1869, as well as a prodigious author of articles and books on
Christianity and morality. Lightly toned, stained, creased and rippled. Mounting
remnants on verso of card (no show-through). Card has irregular left edge and
missing top right corner. Folded once horizontally and twice vertically.
