ANDREW RAYMOND - TYPED SENTIMENT SIGNED - HFSID 112409
ANDREW RAYMOND. Typed Sentiment signed: "Andrew v. v.
Raymond/Presdt Union College", 5½x1¼. Typed sentiment at upper left reads
"Yours very truly." Andrew Van Vrancken Raymond (b. 1854), a Minister of
the Dutch Reform and later the Presbyterian church, was President of Union
College, Schenectady, N.Y., from 1894-1907. Union College, one of America's
most academically respected institutions had suffered from financial
mismanagement in the mid-19th century and a resulting decline in enrollment.
Raymond restored Union to financial health and boosted the science
curriculum, persuading General Electric's Charles Steinmetz to head the newly
established Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics.
