Autograph sentiment signed: "Best Wishes/Andrew Young", 5x3 card. Young, a prominent Black politician and Civil Rights leader, helped draft the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. While pastoring Black churches in the South, Young had met several Civil Rights leaders, including Martin Luther King, Jr.; the two men would found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Following King's assassination in 1968, Young worked in the organization with Ralph Abernathy until 1970, when he left to run unsuccessfully for Congress. Young won the seat in 1972, and represented Georgia through 1976, when President Jimmy Carter, whom Young had supported, appointed Young as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Young was the first Black American in the post, but he resigned in 1979, following controversy over his unauthorized meeting with representatives of the Palestine Liberation Organization. In 1981, he was elected Mayor of Atlanta, a position that he held until 1990. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
