ANDY DEVINE and GRANT WITHERS
The two actors sign opposite sides of a 6x4½ pink album leaf.
Signature: "Andy Devine", and on verso "Best always/Grant Withers", 6x4½ pink album leaf. Each side has a small B/w newspaper photograph of the actor affixed. ANDY DEVINE (1905-1977, born Jeremiah Schwartz), appeared in silent films, but was afraid his rasping voice, the result of a childhood injury, would exclude him from the talkies. On the contrary, it helped make him the quintessential comic sidekick, first in films to Richard Arlen (1939-1941) and Roy Rogers (late 1940s), then on TV to Guy Madison's Wild Bill Hickock (1951-1958), remembered for his line, "Hey, Wild Bill! Wait for me." He hosted a popular children's TV program in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Devine was also a regular on Jack Benny's radio show from 1937. American actor GRANT WITHERS (1905-1959) began acting during the silent film era and transitioned well with the introduction of "talkies". From 1944 to 1954 Withers was under contract with Republic Pictures. He appeared in nine films with actor John Wayne including Fort Apache (1948) and Rio Grande (1950). Some of his other films include Mr. Wong, Detective (1938) which he starred in with actor Boris Karloff and My Darling Clementine (1946). His career spanned from the 1920's to the late 1950's and he also appeared in a number of television series. In 1930 he eloped with 17 year old actress Loretta Young which was widely publicized at the time. Withers committed suicide in March of 1959 by overdosing on barbiturates. Frayed at right edge.
