ANDY DEVINE
The radio and screen actor known for his sidekick roles signs this contract for a company to use his name for advertising purposes
Contract signed: "Andy Devine" in blue ink. 2 pages, 8½x11. April 26, 1956. Contract for Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn, Inc. to use his photograph, name, and reproductions of either for a two year period in the promotion of the "Andy Devine Quik Slate", for which they will pay him the sum of $1,500. Accompanied by unsigned photograph of Devine in western wear. Andy Devine (1905-1977), born Jeremiah Schwartz, appeared in silent films, but was afraid his rasping voice, the result of a childhood injury, would exclude him from the talkies. On the contrary, it helped make him the quintessential comic sidekick, first in films to Richard Arlen (1939-1941) and Roy Rogers (late 1940s), then on TV to Guy Madison's Wild Bill Hickock (1951-1958), remembered for his line, "Hey, Wild Bill! Wait for me." He hosted a popular children's TV program in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Devine was also a regular on Jack Benny's radio show from 1937. Toned. Corners rounded. Normal mailing folds. Deep horizontal crease across center. Holes from staples in top left corners. Ink notes (unknown hand) on first page and bottom right corner of second page. Otherwise, fine condition.
