ANDY DEVINE
Publicity photograph shown as Sneezer in the 1939 western Geronimo!
Inscribed Printed Photograph Signed in Ink: "To Harold/Andy Devine". B/w with brown hue,
8x10. Publicity still for the 1939 film, Geronimo!, which co-starred Devine as Sneezer. In
1939, Devine also appeared in seven other feature films: Stagecoach, The Spirit of Culver,
Never Say Die, Mutiny on the Black Hawk, Tropic Fury, Legion of Lost Flyers and The
Man from Montreal. Legendary character actor Andy Devine (1905-1977), who first
appeared in silent films, was afraid that his rasping voice, the result of a childhood injury,
would exclude him from the talkies. On the contrary, it helped make him the quintessential
comic sidekick, first in films to Richard Arlen (1939-1941) and Roy Rogers (late 1940s).
Devine then moved to TV, where he was the sidekick to Guy Madison's Wild Bill Hickock
(1951-1958); Devine is remembered for his line, "Hey, Wild Bill! Wait for me." Devine who
had been a regular on Jack Benny's radio show from 1937, also hosted a popular children's
TV program in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Lightly creased at blank margins and corners,
worn at edges of corners. Surface creases and scratches (most not evident head on). Otherwise,
fine condition.
