ANDY GRANATELLI
Popular automobile promoter and businessman smiles for black and
white headshot, signs name in black ink
Inscribed photograph signed: "To Robert/ Andy/ Granatelli" in
black ink. B/w, 8x10. Andy Granatelli (1923-2013) was the CEO of the
motor oil company STP as well as a major figure in automobile racing events.
Born in Dallas, Granatelli's first job was as an auto mechanic and "speed shop"
entrepreneur alongside his brothers; they used to modify engines into
racing-quality equipment. He became a promoter for popular WWII automobile
racing events such as the "Hurricane Racing Association" which combined racing
opportunities for up-and-coming drivers with crowd-pleasing theatrics. In the
1960s, Granatelli became a very visible spokesman for STP oil and gasoline
treatment products, appearing on television and radio advertisments, and became
a major sponsor for events such as the Indianapolis 500. His driver Mario
Andretti won the event in 1969. Granatelli was inducted into the International
Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in
2001. Corners rounded. Sticker affixed on verso. Ink notes on verso in unknown
hand. Otherwise, fine condition.
