ANGELO BERTELLI
Photocopy of a sports cartoon which calls him "Bull's Eye Bertelli", signed
by him in ink
Photocopy signed in ink: "Angelo Bertelli", 8½x11. Illustrated sports
cartoon titled "Bull's Eye Bertelli". Angelo Bertelli (1921-1999) was the
first Heisman Trophy winner from Notre Dame (1943). The tall, skinny
Bertelli was a fourth-string tailback in his freshman year, but in 1941 new
head coach Frank Leahy recognized his passing skills, moved him to quarterback,
and built the new T-formation around him. Bertelli responded by winning
All-American honors twice and the Heisman trophy in his senior year, despite
being drafted by the Marines Corps before seasons end. In World War II he
fought in the Pacific, nearly killed on Iwo Jima when a mortar shell landed
near him. After the war he was a businessman, and a radio announcer for
Princeton football in the 1950s and sixties. Fine condition.
