ANGELO PATRI
The Italian-American educator and child-psychologist sends letter of thanks, signs name in black ink
Typed letter signed: "Angelo Patri" in black ink. 1 page, 8½x5½. Written on personal Consulting Educators letterhead. New York City, New York. December 4, 1933. Addressed to Mr. Luther J. Heilman of Concordia, Missouri. In full: "I am very proud to have been selected by your class as one of the forty-five who are to be included in your Autograph Album and I have gladly signed the card which you enclosed and return it to you herewith. With my best wishes to you and your classmates, I am, Sincerely yours". Angele Patri (1876-1965) was an Italian-American author and educator. After immigrating to the United States when he was five, Patri graduated from the College of the City of New York in 1897 and eventually attained a Masters from Columbia University in 1904. He worked as a schoolteacher from 1898 to 1908, and perhaps was the first Italian-born American to become a school principal in the United States. Patri was influenced by the writings of John Dewey, and tried to engage students with tasks that went beyond book learning. He wrote the syndicated column "Our Children" on child psychology, as well as published many books including A School Master of the Great City (1917), Child Training (1922), School and Home (1925) and The Questioning Child (1928); he furthermore published many children's books such as Whtie Patch (1911), Pinocchio in Africa (1911) and The Adventures of Pinocchio (1937). Binding hole in left margin. Normal mailing folds. Corners and edges rounded. Lightly stained. Otherwise, fine condition.
