ANITA BRYANT
B/w bust photo from Columbia Records of Anita Bryant in a wide-brimmed hat, signed with "Warmest Regards"
Printed photograph signed in ink: "Warmest Regards/Anita Bryant". B/w, 8x10 overall, image 7¼x8¼ (one surface). Captioned in lower margin. Anita Bryant (b. 1940), a former Miss Oklahoma and runner-up for Miss America, had some hit pop singles (1959-1960), including "Paper Roses" and "Till There Was You." Thereafter she concentrated on religious music, and moved to Miami to raise a family. She was much in demand as a commercial spokeswoman, especially associated with the Florida Citrus Commission's promotions of orange juice. In 1977, Bryant campaigned against a Miami-Dade County ordnance protecting the rights of homosexuals. Alleging that gays hoped to recruit children to their lifestyle, she founded Save Our Children to oppose gay rights nationally. These efforts provoked a boycott of Florida oranges, and the Citrus Commission and other advertisers dropped her from their campaigns. She tried to establish music theaters in Branson, Missouri and other sites in the Ozarks, but the ventures ended in bankruptcy. Corner creases. Lightly soiled in right margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
