Signature of "the Face," America's first supermodel
Signature: "Anita Colby", 3x5 card. Anita Colby (1914-1992), born Anita Counihan was the first supermodel, appearing on 32 magazine covers in one month in 1937 and earning more money than many Hollywood stars. Called "the Face," she appeared altogether on an estimated 50,000 billboards and 1,500 magazine covers. Clark Gable and James Stewart were reportedly among her suitors. She appeared in some B movies, but said later she hadn't worked hard enough at acting, expecting success to come as easily as it had in modeling. She found a different kind of success in Hollywood, hired by David O. Selznick to tutor top flight stars (including Jennifer Jones, Ingrid Bergman and Judy Garland) on publicity, poise and beauty tips. Lightly toned. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
