Signatures dated from 1899 and 1900. McGee has added her unprecedented
appointment as a female US army surgeon.
Signature: "Anita Newcomb McGee/A.A. Surgeon, U.S.A./Decr 19-1900"
and, on verso, "W.A. Harris/Nov 16th 1899. Kansas", 6½x2¼.
"Senator" written (unknown hand) next to Harris' signature. ANITA NEWCOMB
(1864-1940), who married geologist W.J. McGee in 1888, was appointed Acting
Assistant Surgeon, United States Army on August 29, 1898. She served through
the Spanish-American War until 1900. The only woman to hold the post, McGee
founded the Army Nurse Corps in 1901. Three years later, she took a party of
nurses to Japan for six months during the Russo-Japanese War. WILLIAM
ALEXANDER HARRIS (1841-1909) was U.S. Senator from Kansas from 1897-1903. A
former U.S. Congressman (1893-1895), he was a candidate for the Democratic
nomination for Vice President in 1904. Irregularly cut, which has binding nicks.
