ANN CORIO
Dressed for the harem in an inscribed and signed photo, captioned
"America's Dream Girl"
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To/May/Ann Corio". B/w, 8x10
overall, image 7¼x8¾ (one surface). Captioned in lower margin "Ann
Corio/America's Dream Girl". Ann Corio (1914-1999) was a burlesque star of
the 1930s, featured at Minsky's Burlesque in New York and the Howard Theatre
in Boston. When New York's Mayor La Guardia cracked down on such shows in 1939,
Corio moved to Los Angeles, and quickly established herself as a B movie
queen. Her films from the early 1940s include Swamp Woman, Jungle
Siren (co-starring Buster Crabbe), Sarong Girl, The Sultan's
Daughter and Call of the Jungle. She boosted US Army morale as a
pin-up in Yank magazine (September 8, 1943). She starred in a Broadway
show, This Was Burlesque in 1965 (authoring a book of the same name),
and refashioned the show as a "musical satire" for a 1981 run. Lightly
creased.
