ANN DVORAK
Promotional photo for Scarface, inscribed in person to collector Saul
Goodman
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Saul/Ann Dvorak". B/w, 8x10.
Promotional photo for Scarface. Collector's ink stamp on verso dates
signature: August 28, 1936. Stage and screen actress Ann Dvorak
(1912-1979), pronounced Vorshak, was the daughter of silent film leading lady
Anna Lehr. Dvorak starred in several Warner Bros. films of the early 1930s,
including Scarface, Love is a Racket and Sky Devils. In
Scarface (1932), Dvorak played the sister of title gangster Paul Muni.Salary disputes with the studio diminished her Hollywood prospects
thereafter. During World War II, Dvorak drove an ambulance in London while
continuing to make English films. Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York
business man by day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making
friends with many celebrities. While other autograph seekers offered album
leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign
in fountain pen. Light corner creases and a paper clip impression. Mild
rippling to emulsion. Otherwise, fine condition.
