Esther "Eppie" Pauline Friedman Lederer (1918-2002). Lederer won a contest
to write the advice column in 1955, and her witty - and sometimes acerbic -
advice appeared in newspapers for 45 years. Lederer, who was married to
businessman Jules Lederer, had a twin sister, Pauline "Popo" Esther Friedman
Phillips, who started the competing Dear Abby advice column in 1956,
writing under the pen name of Abigail Van Buren. The competition led to a
strained relationship between the sisters, who publicly reconciled in
1964, but were not on speaking terms shortly before Lederer's death. The
Ann Landers column was discontinued shortly after Lederer died (when
the last of her original material was published); the Dear Abby column
continues under the authorship of Phillips' daughter, Jeanne (from 1995).
