THE FAMED ADVICE COLUMNIST GIVES WORDS OF WISDOM TO A TEACHER'S STUDENTS

ANN LANDERS. Typed Letter Signed: "Ann Landers", 1p, 7¼x10½. No place, 1991 July 17. On sheet imprinted with her name to "Dear Bob Hemminger". In full: "You are an excellent teacher to concern yourself so deeply in the welfare of your students. I am sure your example has a great influence on your students - more than you realize. Tell your pupils that they have not lived long enough to realize that it is not enough to keep up with current economic conditions. Young people must equip themselves to compete and survive in a more and more complex world. It takes a well-furnished mind to be flexible enough to adapt to a changing society and economy. My best wishes. Sincerely". Ann Landers was the pen name of columnist Esther "Eppie" Pauline Friedman Lederer (1918-2002). Landers won a contest to write the advice column in 1955, and her witty - and sometimes acerbic - advice appeared in newspapers for 45 years. Lederer, who was married to businessman Jules Lederer, had a twin sister, Pauline "Popo" Esther Friedman Phillips, who started the competing "Dear Abby" advice column in 1956, writing under the pen name of Abigail Van Buren. The competition led to a strained relationship between the sisters, who publicly reconciled in 1964, but were not on speaking terms shortly before Lederer's death. The "Ann Landers" column was discontinued shortly after Lederer died (when the last of her original material was published); the "Dear Abby" column continues under the authorship of Phillips' daughter, Jeanne (from 1995). Lightly creased with folds, lower horizontal fold nicks the upper portion of the "A" in Ann. Fine condition.
