ANN RUTHERFORD
Contract to appear on the Nash Airflyte Theatre teleplay
Document Double signed: "Ann Rutherford", 5 pages, Page 1: 8½x11. Pages 2-5: 8½x14. New York, N.Y. 1950 November 7. Contract with Management Corporation of America for Rutherford's appearance in a teleplay on the Nash Airflyte Theatre, November 23, 1950. On page contains 2 stapled riders, each initialed by Rutherford. The third page is a documentary, also dated November 7 and also signed "Ann Rutherford", attesting to her understanding that MCA is acting as her employer, not as her agent, in connection with this performance. At MGM from 1937, Ann Rutherford (1917-2012) gained minor stardom as Polly Benedict in the studio's Andy Hardy series. She was allowed to display her perky comic gifts in a trio of 1940s mystery-comedies co-starring Red Skelton (Whistling in the Dark, Whistling in Dixie, Whistling in Brooklyn), and was quite appealing as Carreen O'Hara in Gone With the Wind. (As of March 2011, she is one of only four surviving actors who had speaking parts in Gone with the Wind.) She closed out her film career in 1950 to devote more time to her private life; thereafter limiting her activity to her annual appearance as Suzanne Pleshette's mother on TV's The Bob Newhart Show. Rutherford's starring performance scheduled here was in a play titled "The Doll in the Pink Dress." Edges worn and lightly frayed. Two paragraphs of the contract are crossed out. Otherwise, fine condition.
