a manuscript letter.
Clipped signature: "Anna Brassey", 5¼x2½. Apparently clipped
from a manuscript letter, below the sentiment "Yours sincerely" in a different
hand. Ink caption (unknown hand): "Lady Brassey". Anna Brassey
(1839-1887), the wife of English parliamentarian Sir Thomas (later Earl)
Brassey, published the first of her widely read travel books, A Voyage on
the Sunbeam: Our Home on the Ocean for Eleven Months, in 1878. Several
subsequent books chronicled her travels through the world's oceans. Contracting
malaria, she died and was buried at sea. Her collection of ethnographic and
natural history materials is now housed in the Hastings Museum. Toned and worn.
Signature light but legible. Edges frayed. Fold through center, Otherwise, fine
condition.
