ANNA CORA MOWATT RITCHIE
The author and actress signs as Anne Ritchie
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Believe me/Yrs sincerely/Anne Ritchie", 3¾x1½ card, affixed to a 4¼x2 sheet (2 surfaces). Playwright, novelist and actress Anna Cora Mowatt Ritchie (1819-1870), born Anna Cora Ogden to an American merchant in Bordeaux, France, eloped with prominent lawyer James Mowatt in 1834. Mowatt encouraged her literary aspirations, and she began publishing books and articles, under pen names at first, in 1836. In 1841 she began a series of public readings, the first attended by Edgar Allen Poe, who praised her performance. In 1845 and 1847, she had two big stage hits at New York's Park Theatre, Fashion and Armand. Not satisfied with writing, she made her acting debut in New York in The Lady of Lyons (1845). James Mowatt died in 1851; in 1853 she re-married. Her wedding to William Ritchie, the son of newspaper editor Thomas Ritchie, was attended by President Pierce and his Cabinet. She left the stage in 1854, resuming her career as a novelist. In 1860, she left Ritchie, moved to London, and continued writing novels until her death. She was buried in London beside the grave of her first husband. Light foxing. Irregularly cut at edges. Slightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
