ANNA ELIZABETH DICKINSON
The abolitionist speaker who began her crusade against slavery as a teenager signed this
card affixed to a larger sheet
Signature: "Yours Very Truly/Anna E. Dickinson/March 12. 1871", 4½x3, affixed to 8½x11
sheet. Known as the "Joan of Arc" of the abolitionist movement because she began her
crusade against slavery while in her teens, Anna Elizabeth Dickinson (1842-1932)
contributed essays to William Lloyd Garrison's The Liberator and was known for her scathing
speeches. Regarding the abolition movement and Reconstruction, she took a political position
between the Radical Republicans and President Abraham Lincoln. Her incredible speaking
ability surprised many listeners due to her young age. She was the first woman to speak
before the United States Congress, receiving a standing ovation. Over the years, she
expanded her social reform stances to include women’s rights and even interracial marriage.
Dickinson wrote a novel titled Which Answer? in 1868, and a memoir titled A Ragged
Register of People, Places, Opinions (1879). Later in life, she became a popular theater
writer and actress. She worked on The Crown of Thorns (1876), Mary Tudor (1878). In
1882, she starred as Hamlet in the titular play on Broadway. Lightly rippled from mounting.
