ANNA MARIE ROSENBERG
Signed and dated letter to LOOK magazine on what she misses most about FDR
Typed letter signed "Anna M. Rosenberg". 1 page, 7¾x10¼, on Assistant Secretary of Defense letterhead. Feb. 5, 1952. Addressed to Mr. Michael Allen, LOOK Magazine, 488 Madison Ave., New York, New York. In full: "Dear Mr. Allen: In accordance with your request, attached is a brief statement on WHAT I MISS MOST ABOUT FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT. I am terribly sorry it is so late in getting to you. Sincerely, Anna M. Rosenberg". Rosenberg (1902-1983) was a Hungarian-born American politician. Her family moved to New York in 1912, and she became a naturalized American in 1919 when she married Julius Rosenberg. She began her political involvement in the 1920s dealing with labor issues, work that brought her in contact with Franklin Delano Roosevelt during his 1928 bid for governor of New York. He later tapped her to fill various labor positions during his presidency, including regional director of the War Manpower Commission from 1942 to 1945, work that earned her the Medal of Freedom in 1945 and made her the first woman recipient of the Medal for Merit. In 1950, she was named Assistant Secretary of Defense under president Harry S. Truman, a posting that Sen. Joseph McCarthy unsuccessfully opposed and that she held until 1953. As assistant secretary, she worked to promote racial integration and protect minority rights in the armed forces. Lightly toned and creased. Upper left corner has been torn out. Page has been folded in three and unfolded. Pencil mark in center of page. Otherwise in fine condition.
