ANNA PAVLOVA, HUGHES MACKLIN, ELLALINE TERRIS and OTHERS
Stars of the circa 1913 British stage sign an album leaf in Harrogate, the home of the Grand Opera House and other entertainment venues of the day.
Signatures: "Alice Deliphine", "Anna Pavlova", "Yours Sincerely/Hughes Macklin/Harrogate Apl 3-13", "Maria Levins Kaja/1913 Harrogate/18 June/20 August" and one unknown signer, and, on verso, "Yours very sincerely/Jno W. Rodgers./July 1914./'Continuous'" and "Kind wishes from/Ellaline Terris" (on 4½x1¼ pink sheet affixed at lower right margin) and one unknown signer, 7½x6¼. Harrogate was the home of the Grand Opera House (now the Harrogate Theatre), which opened in 1900. By 1910, some 75,000 people a year were visiting Harrogate, whose attractions also included the Royal Baths. Russian prima ballerina ANNA PAVLOVA (1881-1931) made her U.S. debut at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York in 1910. She had studied with the Maryinsky Theatre's Imperial School of Ballet in 1891, joining the Imperial Ballet in 1899 and becoming a prima ballerina, after having successfully danced Giselle, in 1906, the year before she embarked on her first tour of Moscow. After returning to Russia in 1910, Pavlova founded her own group with eight dancers in St. Petersburg, Russia, and she began making world tours (including her first return visit to the U.S.) in 1913. Pavlova was known for her grace and elegance, evident in her most famous performance, The Dying Swan. In 1918, she choreographed Autumn Leaves, which, along with Californian Poppy and The Dragonfly, became audience favorites. Singer and actor HUGHES MACKLIN sang over 40 tenor parts, primarily with touring companies. He also appeared in two feature films, Lily of Killarney (1934) and Melody of My Heart (1936). ELLALINE TERRIS (1871-1971), a popular British singer and actress who had been born in the Falkland Islands, was the daughter of William Lewin, a well-known actor (as William Terriss) in London. Terriss, who made her London stage debut in 1888 at the age of 16, married Seymour Hicks, a fellow actor, in 1893, and the couple would successfully tour in stage productons in both Britain and the U.S. Her husband was the author of a number of plays, including musicals in which the couple co-starred. Later in her career, Terriss appeared in nearly a dozen films in which her husband was also involved (either as an actor, the director or a writer), including Scrooge (1931), Royal Cavalcade (1935) and The Four Just Men (1939, her last film). She died at the age of 100, surviving her husband by 22 years. Worthy of further research. Lightly creased. Show through of writing at some signatures (all legible). Slightly soiled, tackhead-size stain on verso (light show through at upper margin of front). Irregular left edge from removal from bound book. Overall, fine condition.
