ANNA RUSSELL
A vintage 3x5 candid photo of the actress and writer posing in front of a stately establishment, smiling for the camera
Photograph signed: "Best wishes/Anna Russell," in black felt tip. B/w, 3x5 image, 3½x5½ overall (one surface). Candid photo. Anna Russell (1911-2006) was a British film and stage actress, writer and producer. Beginning her career in the late 1930's, Russell has appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show (1953), What Men Live by (1939) and Matlock Police (1975). In 1953, Russell premiered her own theatre production titled Anna Russell's Little Show. Known for her singing and deadpan comedic performances, Russell portrayed various characters, including one of her most memorable roles as the Witch in Hansel and Gretel (1954). She is also the writer of several books, including The Power of Being a Positive Stinker (1955) and the Anna Russell Songbook (1958). This photograph is from the collection of Francis and Violet Zane, Hawaii natives who moved to California in the 1920's. Francis Zane had a job at the historic Curran Theater and the San Francisco Opera House, which is where he began his massive collection, with photographs and materials ranging from the 1920's to 1960's. The location and luck of his occupation would land him smack dab in the middle of the celebrity world, allowing him to capture some of the most unique and interesting pieces of Hollywood History. Bowed. Lightly toned. Corners slightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
