ANNA STEN. Postcard Photograph signed: "Anna Sten". B/w with sepia hue, 3½x5½ overall, image 3x4¼ (one surface). Name imprinted at lower margin. Not filled in or stamped on verso. Russian-born actress Anna Sten (1908-1993) began her career in Russian silent films. In 1931, she starred in the German film version of The Brothers Karamazov, capturing the attention of Sam Goldwyn, who signed Sten to a contract, unaware that she did not speak a word of English. Goldwyn Pictures, which dubbed Anna "The Passionate Peasant", sold her image to newspapers across the U.S. while the actress spent a year studying English. She made her debut in Nana (1934) and then starred in We Live Again (1934) and The Wedding Night (1935) for Goldwyn before the two parted ways. The actress went on to appear in a handful of other films, including A Woman Alone (1936), Exile Express (1939), The Man I Married (1940), So Ends Our Night (1941), Chetniks (1943), They Came to Blow Up America (1943), Three Russian Girls (1943), Let's Live a Little (1948), Soldier of Fortune (1955), Runaway Daughters (1956) and The Nun and the Sergeant (1962, her last film). Sten also made guest appearances in two TV series, The Walter Winchell File (1957) and Arrest and Trial (1964). Ink slightly beaded at the "A" of Anna. Lightly soiled at blank margins and upper left background. Minor "silvering" at clothing. Overall, fine condition.
