Signed autograph letter, written during her first appearance on
Broadway
Autograph Letter signed: "Annabella", 2p (front and verso),
5¼x3¼ card. Martin Beck Theatre, New York City, circa 1944. On card from
the Hotel Pierre to "Dear Miss Silvermand", in full: "First
thank you for picture. Think you are a very pretty girl. Very sorry that I will
not be able to attend concert. Hope you have a nice time. Sincerely". French
actress Annabella (1909-1996), born Suzanne Georgette Charpentier, was tapped
at age 16 to star in Napoléon (1927). She was a star of French
movies in the 1930s before coming to Hollywood in 1938. The following year,
Annabella married her third husband (1939-1948), Tyrone Power; her
second husband (1931-1938) was actor Jean Murat. Anabella's film credits
include Dinner at the Ritz (1937), The Baroness and the Butler
(1938), Suez (1938), Bridal Suite (1939) and Don Juan
(1950). Annabella starred in two Broadway plays, an adaptation of Sartre's No
Exit (1946), and before that her Broadway debut in Jacobowsky and the
Colonel, which ran for 417 performances at the Martin Beck Theatre, March
1944 to March 1944. Paper residue (previous mounting) at lower left. Lightly
creased and toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
