7x8 close-up photograph inscribed - fittingly - to Paul
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Paul/Sincerely/Annette/Funicello". B/w, 7¼x8. The "sweetheart" of TV's The Mickey Mouse Club, American entertainer Annette Funicello (b. 1942) began performing at age 10. The Disney people themselves sensed that Funicello had star quality, building several musical numbers around her. In 1957, had her first hit on the pop charts, "Tall Paul." It has been claimed that this was the first rock song by a female artist to reach the top ten, although to call "Tall Paul" rock and roll is stretching the definition a bit. While still under contract to Disney, Funicello began appearing in American-International's Beach Party series, usually co-starring with Frankie Avalon. After playing an extended cameo role as Davy Jones' sweetheart in The Monkees' film vehicle Head, Funicello cut down on her professional appearances, preferring to spend time with her family. In 1987, she and onetime cohort Frankie Avalon co-financed and starred in the nostalgic musical film Back to the Beach. She has battled bravely in recent years against the ravages of multiple sclerosis. Signature lightly beaded but legible. Adhesive residue and ink stamp on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
