Signature of the former German Minister of Education, obliged to resign in a plagiarism scandal
Signature: "Annette Schaven", 4¼x2½. German politician Annette Schaven (b. 1955) was Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports for the Land ("state") of Baden Würrtemburg from 1995 to 2005, responsible for the controversial ruling that a Moslem public school teacher could not wear a head scarf to class. In 2005 Schaven, a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), became Federal Minister of Education under Chancellor Angela Merkel. A close colleague of Merkel, she was nonetheless forced to resign in a plagiarism scandal (February 9, 2013). A wikileaks-related website claimed that Schaven had plagiarized portions of her PhD dissertation, triggering an investigation by a faculty committee. Concluding that the charge was true, the University of Düsseldorf withdrew Schaven's doctorate. Schaven insists that the charge is untrue, and has promised to sue the University. Pencil note (unknown hand) at top left edge. Fine condition.
