ANNIE LOUISE CARY
Autograph card signed by the contralto in New Yotk City dated 1870, less than a month after her debut there at Steinway Hall!
Signature: "Annie Louise Cary/New York City/October 5, 70". 5x2¾ card. Printed autograph card. This signature is dated less than a month after Cary's New York City debut at Steinway Hall on Sept. 18, 1870. Cary (1841-1921), born Ann Louisa Cary, was considered the foremost American contralto of the 1870s and was one of the United States' most popular singers. She made her 1868 debut in Copenhagen as Ulrica in Verdi's Un ballo in maschera, but she didn't make much of an impression on the States until she knocked 'em dead at her 1870 New York City concert debut with her rich voice, grand delivery of tragic music and surprising three-octave vocal range. Cary is most associated with Azucena and Amneris in the Verdi operas Il Trovatore and Aïda. She had a number of firsts to her credit, including playing Amneris in the 1873 American premiere of Aïda, appearing in the American premieres of Verdi's Requiem (1874), Bach's Magnificat (1875) and Christmas Oratorio (1877) and Boito's Mefistofele (1880). She was also the first American woman to perform in a Wagnerian role in the United States in an 1874 production of Lohengrin. She retired in 1882. Lightly toned and foxed. Lightly creased in bottom right corner from mounting. Otherwise, fine condition.
