ANSEL ADAMS
The California native signed this message in pencil
Typed Letter Signed: "Ansel". 5½x3¼. One page. Dated April 18, 1959. In Full
(with grammatical mistakes): "Dear Nick--- Yes, the old budget got in the way! /
I am very sorry, because it would have been grand seeing you here. But I shall see
you in May, anyway!". Ansel Adams (1902-1984) was born in San Francisco,
California. He became one of the most famous photographers in United
States history, mostly taking high-resolution landscape photographs. His
subject matter was predominantly the American West. With photographers
Willard Van Dyke and Edward Weston, Adams formed a group of
photographers called Group f/64. All primary members were based out of San
Francisco and framed their productions from a Western America perspective. He
published numerous photographic books, including Parmelian Prints of the High
Sierras (1927), The Land of Little Rain (1950), and Yosemite Valley (1967).
One notable publication that did not depict nature scenes is Born Free and
Equal (1944), a book that featured images from the Japanese American
Internment camp at the Manzanar War Relocation Center. Although he was
criticized for this publication due to its perceived anti-patriotic sentiment, the
book demonstrates Adams' dedication to social reform. In 1946, Adams earned
one of his three Guggenheim fellowships and used it to photograph every
National Park in the United States. He was the first photographer to
accomplish this feat. His black and white photographs can still be seen in
various printed materials today; they remind viewers of the beauty of nature and
are typically used to promote environmentalism. Toned. Light wear. Otherwise,
fine condition.
