ANSON G. McCOOK
Letter assuring the Republican Club of New York of his continued support
Autograph Letter signed: "Anson G. McCook", 2 pages (front and verso), 5x7. Washington, D.C., 1888 February 9. On letterhead of the Secretary of the US Senate, but with that title crossed out to indicate an unofficial correspondence. To James S. Lehmaier, Secretary [Republican Club of New York], in full: "Please accept my thanks for the very kind invitation to the dinner of the Club on Friday evening. I fear that it will be impossible for me to attend, but I shall watch the proceedings with the greatest of interest. Be good enough to say to the Committee for whom you write that, as I am a member of the Club, it gave me great pleasure to give them what little aid I could in procuring speakers, and I hold myself ready at any time to do all in my power to advance the interests of the Club and the cause which it represents. Yours very truly". Anson George McCook (1835-1917) was born in Steubenville, Ohio. He entered the Union Army as captain of the Second Regiment in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 17, 1861 and served during the Civil War until October 21, 1865. A student of law, he was appointed assessor of internal revenue for the seventeenth Ohio district in 1865. McCook moved to New York City in 1873, founded the New York Law Journal and served as president of the New York Law Publishing Company until his death. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Republican from New York and served from March 4, 1877 until March 3, 1883. He then served as Secretary of the United States Senate (1883-1893) and as city chamberlain of New York City (1895-1898). Filing holes at left edge. Multiple mailing folds. Left edge lightly toned.
