The poet signs an autograph quotation by 17th century songwriter John Dowland
Autograph Quotation signed: "Anthony Hecht", 6½x3½. In full: "Happy the heart that thinks
of no removes". Penned on a First Day Cover honoring Edgar Lee Master, 6-cent stamp
affixed, postmarked Petersburg, Illinois, August 22, 1970, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Hecht
has quoted the final lines of a song by lute player/songwriter John Dowland (1563-1626),
"Fine Knacks for Ladies." Hecht (1923-2004) published eight volumes of poetry between A
Summoning of Stones (1954) and The Darkness and the Light (2001). His collection The
Hard Hours (1967) won the Pulitzer Prize. Hecht is also an academic, teaching most
recently at Georgetown University, an editor and literary critic. Fine condition.
