Lyndon B. Johnson's Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare
writes to a man in New York thanking him for sending a hand-lettered card.
Typed Letter signed: "Anthony J Celebrezze", as Secretary
of Health, Education, and Welfare, 1 page 6½x9. Washington, D.C., 1964
March 23. On letterhead of The Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare
addressed to Mr. Leo J. Sylvor, Bronx, New York. In full: "Thank you
for your letter of March 17 and the enclosed hand-lettered card. It was
thoughtful of you to send it to me. I am enclosing an autographed photograph
[not included], as you requested. Sincerely," Italian-born Democrat
Anthony J. Celebrezze (1910-1998), a WWII veteran, served as an Ohio State
Senator from 1951-1953, as Mayor of Cleveland from 1953-1962 and as
Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare under Presidents Kennedy and
Johnson (1962-1965). On September 1, 1965 he took the oath of office for the
U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and served as a federal
appeals court judge until 1980, when he retired from active bench service
and took senior status. Lightly creased. Two small pin size stains at lower
right section. Otherwise, fine condition.
