Newley was also featured in a long list of made-for-TV movies, and he guest starred on a long list of TV shows from 1956 (Colonel March of Scotland Yard) to 1998 (EastEnders). A talented singer as well as writer, producer and director, Newley had his first hit song, "Idle on Parade" in the late 1950s, and he would go on to chart seven times, including two No. 1 singles ("Why?" and "Do You Mind?"), in 1960. Newley also co-composed (with Leslie Bricusse) a number of hit songs, including "The Candy Man" and "Goldfinger". His second wife (1963-1970) was actress Joan Collins, with whom he had two children.
