Some influential English musicians sign an album leaf, which has been signed on verso by a diplomat
Signatures: "Anthony Payne", "Jane Manning", "Susan Bradshaw", "Thea King", "Brian Hawkins", "William Bennett" and 2 unidentified signatures, 5¾x4 album leaf. Also signed on verso: "Ashley Clarke". English somposer ANTHONY PAYNE (b. 1936) is known for such works as his Phoenix Mass and an orchestral work, Time's Arrow (premiered 1990). He has written commissioned works for well known chamber groups like the English Chamber Orchestra and the Nash Ensemble. In 2005, the Elgar family gave Payne permission to complete unfinished works of Edward Elgar, including his Symphony #3, with critically acclaimed results. Payne is married to soprano JANE MANNING (OBE), who has premiered over 350 new works of contemporary music and recorded many 20th century classics. She heads Jane's Minstrels, and is the author of the New Vocal Reportory (1998). SUSAN BRADSHAW (1931-2005) was an influential English pianist, writer, teacher and critic who championed many new musicians and composers. She composed in her youth, but quit because "I really wasn't good enough." She was sometimes heard to wish that some other composers had followed her example. THEA KING (1925-2007) was principal clarinetist with the English Chamber Orchestra for 35 years (1964-1999). She was named a DBE in 2001. Several composers dedicated works to her. BRIAN HAWKINS plays viola with the Nash Ensemble, performing classical and romantic works. Flautist WILLIAM BENNETT (b. 1936), a solo and orchestral performer, designed a new flute with a deeper range and a new flute tuning system. ASHLEY CLARKE, a British diplomat, was Ambassador to Italy (1953-1962) and creator of the Italian Art and Archives Rescue Fund. Lightly jagged at right edge from removal from bound book. Fine condition.
