Photograph signed: "1950 Anton Dermota", with a sentiment in Italian (untranslated). B/w, 4½x7. Anton Dermota (1918-1989), born in village in Austria-Hungary which is now within independent Slovenia, made his opera debut in Cluj, Romania in 1934. An invitation to the Vienna State Opera, followed, and he first performed there in Mozart's The Magic Flute in 1936. His first leading role followed in 1937: Alfred in Verdi's La Traviata. That same year he sang at the Salzburg Festival in Wagner's Die Meistersinger. A favorite of Viennese audiences, he stayed with the State Opera for over 40 years, helping to save furniture when the opera house burned in an Allied air raid in 1945. Best known for his Mozart roles, Dermota sang some 80 roles on many of the world's great opera stages from Argentina to Australia. Ink note on verso of this photo, however, identifies him with a performance in Bizet's Carmen. Signature lightly faded but legible. Minor defects at edges. Ink stamp on verso.
