Signed 3½x5½ photograph of the German potter who played Jesus at
Oberammergau, affixed to a larger page with printed caption. Extremely
rare!
Photograph signed: "Anton Lang,", and one unknown
signature on verso. Blue-tinted b/w photo 3½x5½ affixed to a larger page 6½x8¼
bearing printed English text, "He takes the part of Jesus." Anton Lang
(1875-1938) was a studio potter who played the part of Jesus at the famed
Oberammergau Passion Play in 1900, 1910 and 1922. He was the Prologue Speaker in
1930 and 1934. Lang's reputation has suffered through confusion with Alois
Lang, a Nazi supporter who played the role of Christ in 1930 and 1934. Anton
Lang was a religiously tolerant pacifist disliked by the Nazis; two of his sons
fled Germany to become US citizens. Newspaper clippings affixed to verso. Toned.
Rippled along bottom margin. Creased throughout. Right edge frayed and torn.
Soiled with ink across image and sheet. Corners of photograph lightly worn.
Small tear on bottom margin. Corners of sheet lightly worn and creased.
