Russian composer Anton Rubinstein wrote this letter in translated German in 1863, inviting the recipient to join him in Liepzig to learn about the cure he was taking for an unknown illness.
Autograph letter signed "Ant. Rubinstein." 1 page, 5¼x8¼. Sept. 2, 1863. Written in German, translated: "Dear Mr. Schloss I have just arrived, but still as a patient and have to stay in my room to recover from the [illegible] It would be kind of you if you would come to me because I would like to learn some thing about my cure [illegible] now in Leipzig. I ask to question the messenger at what hour you would give me the pleasure. Entirely yours,". Rubinstein (1829-1894, born in Wechwotynetz, Russia, now in Transnistria, Republic of Moldova) founded and directed the St. Petersburg Conservatory of Music (1862-1867, 1887-1891). A prolific composer, Rubinstein wrote several operas, including operas Feramors (1863), Dmitry Donskoy (1852) and Sibirskiye okhotniki (Siberian Huntmsen, 1854), six symphonies, five piano concertos for piano and numerous songs and chamber works. Lightly toned, stained and crossed. Holes in bottom right corner, which touch signature. Handwriting and signature have bled lightly but are legible. Discolored and ragged at top and bottom edges. Light tears at top, right and bottom edges, which touch handwriting but not signature. Missing bottom corners. Folded thrice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
