ANTON VAN ROOY; JESSE BENEDICT CARTER
Visiting neutral Switzerland during World War I, the Dutch opera singer and the American scholar sign opposite sides of a piece of paper. Van Rooy quotes a line from The Flying Dutchman, while Carter quotes a Latin phrase apt for the times.
Autograph Quotation signed: "Den flegender Höllander/nennt man mich! (Wagner), [transl: "The Flying Dutchman they call me"]/St Moritz 18 March 1915". Also signed on verso "Post Tenebras Lux [Latin: "After darkness, light"]/12th month of the Great War/Jesse Benedict Carter/St Moritz/26 VII 15". Also signed: "To Mrs. Taylor/who "dealt loving kindnesse which [?] welcome a [?]/Tate Carter", 7x4. ANTON VAN ROOY (1870-1932) was a Dutch operatic bass-baritone, known for his Wagnerian performances. He performed annually at the Bayreuth Festival from 1897 to 1903, until banned for performing a production of Parsifal at the Metropolitan which violated German copyright law. He was also a concert and oratorio singer. Early recordings of van Rooy have been re-mastered and released on compact disc. JESSE BENEDICT CARTER (1872-1917) was an American philologist and religious scholar, with a position as Professor of Latin at Princeton. In 1913 he became Director of the American Academy in Rome. Carter wrote several books on the religion of the early Romans. No information is available about Tate Carter. The spelling of "kindnesse" in her quotation was used by Chaucer, Shakespeare and the King James Bible, so this is probably a quotation from English literature. Lightly toned. Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
