ANTONIO AZITO
A letter to John Willis, Editor of Theatre World, thanking him for
considering him for his publication
Autograph note signed: "Tony Azito", in blue ink, 1 page,
8½x11. New York City, New York. In full: "Dear John, Thank you for
thinking of me. Sorry for taking so long to send this out but I'm just getting
my paper work together. Yours". Antonio Azito (1948-1995) was an
actor and dancer, beginning by training at Julliard. He ultimately dropped from
the prestigious program after finding a passion for modern dancing, with his
particular style being described as marionette like. He appeared in a number of
Broadway plays, with his biggest role being the starring role as The Sergeant of
Police in The Pirates of Penzance (1981). He carried the character
over into the 1983 film, and acted in several more movies, including Apple
Pie (1976), Moonstruck (1987), and The Addams Family
(1991). John A. Willis (1916-2010), active in Theatre
World from the beginning, became its chief editor in 1965, holding that
position until 2008. Willis is regarded as one of the
foremost theatre and film historians of the 20th century. While producing (and
presenting) the annual Theatre World Awards, Willis also served on the
nominating committee for the Tony Awards. Theatre World, which
received its own Tony for Excellence in Theatre in 2001, continues
under chief editor Ben Hodges. Normal mailing folds. Corners slightly worn and
creased. Lightly toned. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
