English dancer, choreographer and teacher Antony Tudor (1908-1987) worked with Marie Rambert's ballet company from 1928 onward, not only dancing principal roles but also choreographing for the company. In 1938, he helped found the London Ballet, but two years later he moved permanently to New York, joining what would become the American Ballet Theatre. After establishing himself as a pioneer of modern dance, he retired from the stage in 1950, continuing to choreograph but devoting himself mainly to teaching at Juilliard and at the Metropolitan's Ballet School. Tudor was a disciplined Zen Buddhist.
