ARAM KHACHATURIAN
Signed 3¼x5 photo, inscribed in Russian to Jascha Heifetz, whom he praises for his energy and talent.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "A. Khachaturian". B/w 3¼x5. Inscription in Cyrillic script, translated in full: "Dear Jascha, Love you for your energy and talent. Best wishes and thank you. Yours". Armenian-born composer Aram Khachaturian (1903-1978), who was born in what is now Georgia, studied the cello in Moscow and wrote a number of his works for that instrument as well as for the violin and piano. The composer's works include concertos, three symphonies and two ballets, Spartacus and Gayane, which features his most famous song, "Sabre Dance". Khachaturian, who also wrote music for films, returned to Moscow in 1951, becoming a Professor at the Gnesiny State Musical and Pedagogical Institute and the Moscow Conservatory. Lituanian-born Jascha Heifetz (1901-1987), described as the "violinist of the century," transcribed and performed Khachaturian's famous "Sabre Dance".During the Soviet era, relations between Soviet-born artists who remained in the USSR and those like Heifetz, who lived in the West and often criticized the Soviet regime and Soviet music policies, were often strained. (Lithuania, an independent nation between 1919 and 1940 and again today), was a Soviet "republic" until the break-up of the USSR). In the case of this inscription, however, the admiration of one musical virtuoso for another, proved stronger than any political differences. Light scratches. Adhesive residue on verso. Pencil note on verso. Otherwise fine condition.
