FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Austro-Hungarian Archduke Joseph August (1872-1962) was appointed General of the Cavalry in November 1914 and assumed the command of the 7th Corps during the difficult Carpathian Winter battles of WWI. He remained on the Italian front until the conclusion of the ninth battle of the Isonzo (October 31 to November 4, 1916) and was then promoted to the command of an Army Front in the East in the rank of Generaloberst. He saw action in Russia and Romania, and received his promotion to Field Marshal on October 24, 1918; this latter position put him in charge of the Austro-Hungarian Army. In the chaos of the Aster Revolution and numerous government changes at the end of WWI, August briefly served as Prime Minister until Allied Forces expressed their dissatisfaction with his role. File note (unknown hand) at upper left. Erased pencil notes (unknown hand) below stamps and address. Affixed to verso is a 1¾x1¾ newspaper article announcing his 60th wedding anniversary. Otherwise, fine condition.
