ARCHIBALD CLINTON "AL" HARTE
Letter outlining ambitious plans to expand the Young Men's Christian
Association in Jerusalem
Typed Letter signed: "Al Harte", 1 page, 8x10. Jerusalem,
1923 August 7. On letterhead of the General Secretary, Young Men's Christian
Association in Jerusalem to H. W. Love, New York City. In full:
"Thanks for yours of January 25th. One of these days I will try to write
a good letter to Mrs. Barney and send you a copy of the same. By the way, I was
surprised yesterday to have a telephone call from Notre Dame Convent and to find
myself talking to Mrs. Barker of Hartford. She is one of the Foreign Department
regular subscribers. Unfortunately she is having some throat trouble and cannot
get about. I helped her to get into better quarters yesterday and will try to
see her again today. I will do what I can for her. Our building plans are on the
jump. I reckon before the week is out we will have the site we have been after
for two years, the choicest vacant site in Jerusalem, and I reckon in another
two years we will have a building which will be as it were the White flower of
our Association building program. At least that is our aim. We are studying,
dreaming and consulting in order to get a building that will meet the needs of
the young men of Jerusalem, forward the work throughout Arab Asia, bring
Jerusalem into close touch with the Association world, and be as pleasing and
graceful in doing the above as possible and at the same time be a spiritual
atmosphere. We plan that our building and site shall constantly breathe forth
our loftiest purpose. If we succeed, it will be worth a visit; if not, Jerusalem
is always worth a visit, so put us down on your program. Sincerely yours".
Archibald "Al" Harte (1865-1946) was a YMCA administrator in the
US and India before getting the post he desired, General Secretary of the
Jerusalem YMCA, in 1919. The building envisioned in this letter was indeed
built, though not as quickly as Harte hoped. It opened in 1933, the year he
retired to a home on the Sea of Galilee. Harte was a chaplain during the
Spanish-American War, and organized YMCA assistance to prisoners of war during
World War I. Toned. Multiple mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
