ARCHIBALD COX
The Watergate Special Prosecutor signed this index card
Signature: "Archibald Cox", 5x3 card. Archibald Cox (1912-2004) was
appointed and later fired (1973) as Watergate Special Prosecutor by President
Nixon. When Cox asked Nixon to surrender the Watergate tapes, Nixon
demanded that Cox be fired. In that famous "Saturday Night Massacre"
(October 20, 1973), Attorney General Elliott Richardson resigned rather than
fire Cox; his deputy William Ruckelshaus also resigned over the same refusal.
Solicitor General Robert Bork finally ordered Cox's dismissal. Ironically, Cox's
great-grandfather, William E. Evarts, served as President Johnson's Chief Counsel
in his impeachment trial proceedings in 1868. Before his appointment as
Watergate Special Prosecutor, Cox was appointed the U.S. Solicitor General
under President John F. Kennedy (1961-1965). He was known as an expert in
labor and constitutional law. Erasure in upper left corner. Otherwise, fine
condition.
