Meserole Bliss (1838-1923) was an American businessman and politician who
was a Democratic member of the US House Representatives, serving New York's
4th district from 1875 to 1883, and again from 1885 and 1889. Born in
Brooklyn, New York, Bliss was an alderman of Brooklyn from 1864 to 1867, serving
as President of the board in 1866. Entering politics first as a Republican,
Bliss was a delegate to the Republican National Conventions of 1864 and 1868,
during which he made an unsuccessful run for mayor in 1867. He joined the
Liberal Republicans for their National Convention in 1872, but by 1876 he was a
delegate to the Democratic National Convention, playing the same role in the 4
succeeding Conventions. A wealthy businessman, Bliss was the president and
vice-president of the Bushwick Railroad Company from 1868 to 1878, and he was
also the Director of the New York & Long Island Bridge Company. Lightly
