In the 1930s, ARCHIBALD MacLEISH (1892-1982) began writing verse concerned with social issues: Conquistador (1933 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry), Frescoes for Mr. Rockefeller's City (1933), Public Speech (1936) and America Was Promises (1939). Librarian of Congress (1939-1944) and FDR's Assistant Secretary of State (1944-1945), MacLeish was Chairman of the U.S. delegation to the London Conference that drew up the UNESCO charter (1945). He was later awarded the 1953 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry (Collected Poems 1917-1952) and the 1959 Pulitzer Prize in Drama (J.B.). Professor at Harvard from 1949-1962, MacLeish was a lecturer at Amherst from 1963-1967. Horizontal mailing fold. Lightly creased. Fine condition.
